Not at all. Our mission continues to be to build sustainable tech products that last. At Fairphone, we have always been (and still are) against wasteful overconsumption. We truly believe that repair is always better than replace, and design our products to be modular and long-lasting for precisely that reason. Longer lasting products equals less e-waste.

At the same time, it makes perfect sense that people want to be budget-conscious and save a bit of money if they can, especially when making big-ticket purchases. And Black Friday has become that moment for a lot of people, regardless of whether we participate. We have always approached the electronics industry and the change we want to bring from a realistic point of view. Engaging over boycotting, diving in over playing it safe. So, instead of ignoring Black Friday, we want to use this opportunity to encourage people to choose fair and shop responsibly, by investing in devices that last longer and are easier to repair.

We don’t want existing Fairphone owners to upgrade their devices unnecessarily. We would much rather they invest in device longevity. Yes and no. We would be lying if we said we don’t want to make more money. Because the only way we can scale our impact is by growing as a business. The ideals that we’re fighting for - device longevity, repairability, reducing e-waste - they will start to become the norm.
