So what do we do with old devices?

Reuse them

In 2024, we achieved a 63% reuse rate for all devices collected. This included recovering spare parts for repairs, and refurbishing non-Fairphone devices. In the last year, we salvaged over 5000 reusable spare parts, including motherboards and displays.

Recycle them

35% of the devices collected in 2024 through our program are not reusable. Of these, 31% will be recycled to recover valuable raw materials through our recycling partner, raw materials that are in high demand but dangerously short supply.

Repurpose them

We have tied up with Belgian-based low tech consultancy, Citronics, to give a new lease of life to old Fairphones. In 2024, they launched the world’s first circular microcomputer, made entirely from Fairphone 2 parts, with plans in place for more circular devices soon.

Why is Fairphone offering a Reuse and Recycle Program?

Our Reuse and Recycle Program aims to reward users for handing in their phones for the chance of a second life or, if not possible, recycling. After returning their old phones, customers receive a Fairphone Gift card for a future purchase in our online shop.

Who can participate? And from which countries can I participate?

The program is currently limited to EU countries where Fairphone also ships to ( see all of our shipping countries here). Unfortunately, we are unable to issue shipping labels for NON-EU countries such as the UK, Switzerland and Norway.

Where can I recycle my old phone if I’m based in a non-EU country?

If you are currently based in a non-EU country, we recommend recycling your old device locally.

How easy is it to recycle a phone or give it a second life? What steps do I have to take to recycle my phone or give it a second life?

Simply provide your phone information (brand, model and condition) via a value check on our website, and you will immediately see what you could receive for sending it back. This is subject to validation of the condition of the device by our service partner. Consider, as well, that the initial offer is valid for 28 days; if the device is received after this period, the suggested value for a device is subject to change.

Once you have registered your recycling request, we will email you a shipping label to send the phone back to us, free of charge. We will email you again once your phone has been received and processed. You will receive a final email from us with your Fairphone Gift Card that can be used in our online shop on any product you like.

I don’t understand the value of Fairphone devices. How does it work?

At Fairphone, we believe in rewarding all customers who wish to extend the life of their Fairphone, regardless of its condition. That's why, through our recycling program, every Fairphone holds the same fixed value. However, if your device is beyond repair and cannot be repurposed (i.e. heavily damaged and non-functional), we're unable to offer any monetary value since it can only be recycled.

If you find yourself with a device that falls into this category, we encourage you to consider local recycling options. While we're happy to assist in the recycling process, please note that no gift card will be provided for devices with zero monetary value.
